I Am a Star youth summit comes to Detroits east side Oct. 3

A free four-hour event for ages 9–19, with workshops, lunch and a $500 scholarship pitch competition. Registration closes Sept. 30.

MorningStar International will host its annual I Am a Star Youth Summit on Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Ford Community Center on Detroit’s east side, offering a free program of workshops, lunch and giveaways for young people ages 9 through 19.

The summit runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 15491 Maddelein St., with entry through Door #5. The event is open to the public, and organizers say parents, educators and community members are welcome to attend alongside students.

Organizers list six sessions covering a mix of personal development and practical skills:

Identifying passions and the potential to live with impact

College Meets Career

Navigating the path from college into a career

Mental Health Matters

Building resilience and prioritizing mental well-being

Financial Literacy

Money habits aimed at long-term financial security

Entrepreneurship

Turning ideas into action and taking charge of your own future

Yoga & Meditation

Reset, relax and recharge body, mind and spirit

A networking segment is also listed, and lunch will be provided at no cost to attendees. The event flyer does not list start times for individual sessions.

A $500 scholarship pitch competition

The summit includes a live pitch competition with a $500 scholarship award. The event’s registration form limits entry to high school seniors and college students, who can opt in when they sign up.

The summit itself is open to students as young as 9, but the scholarship competition is not. Families of younger students can reach MorningStar at 1-888-323-8003 with questions about that portion of the day.

Giveaways and on-site services

Raffles and giveaways are also planned. Free haircuts and free glam makeup services will be available on site, and organizers say T-shirts will be provided to all attendees.

How to register

Registration is open now and closes Wednesday, Sept. 30. The form asks for basic contact details, school and grade level, T-shirt size and an emergency contact. There is no registration fee; the form includes an optional, tax-deductible donation to the organization’s scholarship fund, which students and families can skip.
