Denisse Lopez-Avila and her husband, Carlos Lopez, run Vámonos, a healthy eatery and class space at 4444 W. Vernor Highway in Southwest Detroit that opened in 2023. In written answers to Detroit Community Thrive, Lopez-Avila said she wants Vámonos always to be represented by Southwest Detroit; that she gave away her earlier juice bar, the Michigan Squeeze Station, and learned from it to run Vámonos with her husband alone; and that the week of the February 2025 water-main break showed how strong mutual aid can be in the neighborhood. Dan Gilbert has pledged $1 billion in development capital for the Renaissance Center and the 35-acre east riverfront district, with affordable housing and 18 acres of public space planned, @cityofdetroit posted; the Detroit Free Press posted that an agreement among Bedrock, GM and a community group is expected to be finalized as soon as next week. Detroit Horse Power is developing a $13 million, 14-acre equestrian center in Hope Village, expected to open in early 2027, the city posted. Dan Gilbert pledged $1 billion to a new nonprofit that would redevelop, own and run the Renaissance Center and the 35-acre east riverfront, Bedrock said Oct. 19; CEO Jared Fleisher said it is the money Gilbert committed before, and Bedrock wants City Council approval of the project's tax breaks by Thanksgiving. The Detroit News puts the project's cost at $2 billion, ClickOnDetroit/WDIV at $2.2 billion and Crain's at $2.24 billion. Early in-person voting runs Saturday, Oct. 24, through Sunday, Nov. 1, with an extra day in Detroit on Monday, Nov. 2, at two sites, and the city has issued 103,000 absentee ballots. Activists called for Police Chief Todd Bettison's removal over the seizure of an activist's phone; Bettison says the investigation stems from a citizen complaint. They also called for the firing of the officer who shot 18-year-old Alonzo Lee-Perkins as he ran in June; police said the officer believed he was armed. Patrice Davis, a retired Detroit Public Schools special education teacher who started baking at 18, runs Grannies Pound Cake at 14015 W. Eight Mile Road in Detroit. She started the business to keep busy after retiring and because she couldn't find a pound cake as good as her own; her lemon glaze is modeled on her Aunt Amy's. Her cakes, in butter classic, butter lemon and butter pecan, are also sold at Meijer. In written answers to Detroit Community Thrive, Davis said getting on the shelves was easier than keeping cakes moving off them, recalled a customer who cried because the cake tasted like her late mother's, and advised home bakers to weigh ingredients.
