Development

Gilbert pledges $1 billion for RenCen and riverfront

Dan Gilbert has pledged $1 billion in development capital to reimagine the Renaissance Center and the surrounding 35-acre east riverfront district, @cityofdetroit posted. Plans include affordable housing, space for Detroit-based small businesses and 18 acres of publicly accessible civic space, the city posted. The city's post says the project is expected to create more than 8,000 construction jobs and 2,600 permanent jobs and generate $3.03 billion in visitor spending, with all surplus proceeds invested back into the community. The permanent-jobs figure differs by source: The Detroit News also reported 2,600, while FOX 2 Detroit reported 3,000. Bedrock CEO Jared Fleisher said the $1 billion is the same money Gilbert previously announced, not an additional investment, The Detroit News reported.

The agreement between Bedrock, GM and a community group is expected to be finalized as soon as next week, the Detroit Free Press posted.
