A 2-year-old child is in critical condition after being shot by an unsecured firearm on Detroit's west side Tuesday morning. The incident occurred near Evergreen Road and I-96 while the child's mother was cooking breakfast. A 4-year-old sibling was also present but remained unharmed. Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield expressed heartbreak and anger, stating there is no excuse for leaving loaded weapons within reach of children. She urged residents to store firearms unloaded and locked, noting that free gun locks are available at DPD precincts. No one is currently in custody as investigators work to determine how the shooting occurred.
Sheffield says every child in Detroit deserves to be safe in their own home.
